From Rough CVD Crystal to 3EX Masterpiece: The Cutting & Polishing Journey
Key Executive Takeaways
  • Surat, India processes over 90% of the world's cut diamonds, combining century-old lapidary heritage with cutting-edge optical robotics.
  • 3D Sarine scanning optimizes rough CVD crystal yield while eliminating internal stress fractures.
  • Triple Excellent (3EX) grading requires precise facet angles to guarantee maximum light return and dispersion.

1. Step 1: 3D Sarine Scanning & Laser Planning

The transformation of a square CVD rough crystal into a high-brilliance polished gem begins with high-resolution 3D optical scanning.

Advanced Sarine computer software maps the internal structure of the rough diamond, calculating optimal cutting geometry to achieve maximum carat weight retention while eliminating internal inclusions.

2. Step 2: High-Precision Laser Cleaving & Bruting

Once planned, green-laser cleaving machines slice the rough diamond along precise crystallographic planes without thermal shock.

Automated bruting robotics round the diamond perimeter, forming the precise outline of Round Brilliant, Oval, Emerald, Radiant, or Cushion shapes.

"Laser mapping achieves sub-micron cutting accuracy that was impossible with traditional mechanical saws."

3. Step 3: Artisanal Hand Polishing for 3EX Perfection

While machine automation handles initial shaping, final faceting and polishing require the experienced eye of master lapidaries.

Each of the 57 or 58 facets on a Round Brilliant diamond is polished on a scaife wheel infused with diamond powder. Angle measurements are checked under high-magnification optical comparators to ensure perfect symmetry and light reflection.
